Our annual concert series featuring local and international
music artists from Germany, Sweden, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Japan,
Indonesia, Italy and many more.
Monday, June 17 - Music of Brazil - The Mauro Correa Quinteto
The Mauro Correa Quinteto were formed in 2001 by Mauro Correa (director
and founder) to create and perform the classical and popular music
of Latin America. Quinteto consist of musicians from the San Francisco
Bay area, and all the musicians have worked with different ensembles
and orchestras and play different styles of music. The group has
based their music on styles such as Brazilian classical, Brazilian
choro, samba, bossa-nova and popular Brazilian music, Argentinean
Tango and World music from Latin America. The Quinteto is respectful
of the classical form, open to contemporary ways of expression,
honors the sacred of music and is exploring the ancient mode. The
Quinteto remains committed to creating music they love to perform
and most importantly enjoys sharing the discoveries of their journey
though the language of music.

Lind Scholar 2002
Swedish Jenny Lind Scholar 2002 is 26 year-old Merete Meyer, soprano.
Merete did her undergraduate studies at the Norwegian State Academy
of Music, and is currently a student at the University College of
Opera in Stockholm, Sweden. She will graduate in February 2003.
Her repertoire includes Scandinavian songs, light opera and musical
theater. Maria Ydreborg will accompany Ms. Meyer on piano. Maria
Ydreborg won the Accompanist Scholarship of the Royal University
College of Music in 2002.
The Jenny Lind concert is co-sponsored by the Royal Music Academy, Folkparkerna,
in Stockholm, Sweden and the Consulate General of Sweden in San
Francisco.
The June 21st Concert will also feature a traditional
Swedish Maypole Dance celebrating the Summer Solstice.

Monday, June 24 - Music of Germany - The Gebhard
Ullmann Clarinet Trio
The Gebhard Ullmann Clarinet Trio, with Ullman and Theo Nabicht
playing bass clarinet and JÙrgen Kupke clarinet will present two
hours of fascinating music. Rhythm and harmony emerge from musical
interplay, structures are blending past recognition and it is music
that remains.

entertaining, this Clarinet Trio succeeds with fresh ideas, a multifaceted

Tuesday, June 25 - Music of Switzerland - Freeplex
Switzerland's
participation in the International Music Festival with a concert
of free improvised jazz by the group "Freeplex" with Jonas
Tauber - double bass, Rob Blakeslee - trumpet, and Billy Mintz -
percussion.
Wednesday, June 26 - Music of Japan - Somei Yoshino Taiko
Ensemble
Named after one of the most beautiful cherry blossom
trees in Japan, Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble(SYTE) seeks
to expand the traditional boundaries of Japanese taiko drumming
as well as explore and develop work that incorporates the art of
taiko with other genres of performance art.
SYTE focuses on balancing modern compositions and visual
motifs with traditional taiko drumming. SYTE is dedicated
to promoting a greater understanding of the sensitive and elegant,
yet powerful technique and sound of taiko drumming by creating work,
classes and workshops that are accessible to all audiences.
SYTE is composed of four multifaceted and classically trained
artists who work with theater, dance and music.
Thursday, June 27 - Music of Venezuela - German Mejia
Friday, June 28 - Music of Italy - "Rhapsody
for Billie"
The concert "Rhapsody for Billie"
will be Italy's tribute to Billie Holiday at his year's Spirit of
the Music Festival. The multi media event will present some of Billie
Holiday's most significant songs in nontraditional form. It will
be both a concert and a theatrical performance, in which music shapes
and underlines the progression of a recited monologue on Holiday's
themes. Silvia Schiavoni is the narrative voice accompanied by Giancarlo
Schiaffini's musical arrangements for trombone, voice and electronic
keyboards. Giancarlo Schiaffini is an accomplished composer, trombonist
and tuba player, whose numerous credits include original work and
performances at Teatro alla Scala, Academy of S. Cecilia, Maggio
musicale fiorentino, Philharmonic of Berlin, Lincoln Center in New
York, New Music Concerts of Toronto.
