Ari Relaunches: BAPC.info

bapc

Announcing the relaunch of  the Web site for the Bay Area Photographers Collective. It looks very similar to what was there before but the backend is now built in wordpress and is much easier to update. there’s a lot of event and exhibition content, a regular flow of members and a blog.

I was excited to try out the new wordpress “pods” plugin that allows for building a custom content type. we are using it for the “past exhibitions”. It’s a fairly raw, new product but I’m happy with how it’s working

Decline of world fisheries: Aquacalypse Now

Amazing article about the decline of world fisheries. Hear the NPR interview also.

Beginning in the 1950s, as their operations became increasingly industrialized–with onboard refrigeration, acoustic fish-finders, and, later, GPS–they first depleted stocks of cod, hake, flounder, sole, and halibut in the Northern Hemisphere. As those stocks disappeared, the fleets moved southward, to the coasts of developing nations and, ultimately, all the way to the shores of Antarctica, searching for icefishes and rockcods, and, more recently, for small, shrimplike krill. As the bounty of coastal waters dropped, fisheries moved further offshore, to deeper waters. And, finally, as the larger fish began to disappear, boats began to catch fish that were smaller and uglier–fish never before considered fit for human consumption.

Inventors’ high-flying kites harness wind power

I can imagine a vertical row of these – one every few hundred feet.

One proposed generator looks like a big, floating ball that rolls in the wind, a thousand feet off the ground. Another resembles a skeletal helicopter with four rotors and no pilot. Both would relay their electricity to Earth via cables, tethering them to a particular spot.

Ning Alternatives

I recently launched a Ning site for the Oakland Museum of California:
http://diasdelosmuertos.ning.com

It is a community for celebrating Dias de los muertos (Day of the Dead).

Overall it was a good experience for a project with a tiny budget and very fast schedule. There are lots of features on Ning but very limited ways to implement them. It’s very hard to make a Ning site not look like a Ning site so it’s best not to have that expectation.

There are a number of alternatives:

Flux, like Ning, (and more recently KickApps ), it’s a place for sites to easily create a new social network, or bolt a social network onto an existing site, and add users from other platform social networks with a single click.

Recycling Billboards into Modern Residential Buildings

One proposal by Front Architects suggests turning large billboards into lofted homes – small houses to be sure, but located in some potentially fascinating places.
